CHAPTER 27

Erin had never been inside the bed and breakfast. She had only heard it referred to. Of course, most of the Bald Eagle Falls residents had never actually stayed there because, as Mary Lou said, when people wanted a getaway, they left town. They got away.

Since the closing of the Inn, the B&Bs had picked up the slack and, from what Erin heard, were usually booked up.

The house was similar in age to the one Erin had inherited from Clementine, but it was two stories tall, with bedrooms upstairs instead of on the main floor. Probably twice as many square feet as Erin’s house.

She recognized the curly-haired woman who answered the door, looking questioning.

“Mrs. McClung. I brought you over a delivery from the General Store. We were just over there, so I thought I would pop by with it.”

Mrs. McClung took the box from her slowly. “You’re Erin Price, aren’t you, the baker? You aren’t working at the General Store now?”

“No, we were just saying hi to Mary Lou. She said that you had a bumper crop of strawberries this year.”

Mrs. McClung looked even more confused by this segue.

“Yes, it was a very good year for strawberries.”

“I am running out of strawberries, and she suggested you might have a few extra jars you would like to get rid of.”

“Oh!” Mrs. McClung laughed and shook her head. “I had no idea what this was all about. So you came here to give me the delivery and find out if I had any strawberries you could buy?”

Erin nodded. “That’s pretty much it,” she agreed. Of course, she was still hoping to go in and look around but, if Mrs. McClung didn’t invite her inside, she would have to find another credible excuse to ask.

“Well, that was very nice of you.” Mrs. McClung opened her door wider. “Why don’t you come in while I get you a few jars? You too, Miss Victoria.”

Vic gave her a smile and followed Erin into the house. She looked around.

“I’ve never been in here before. This is very nice, Mrs. McClung.”

Mrs. McClung looked at her and didn’t say anything. Erin had found that some of the Bald Eagle Falls residents really didn’t know how to talk to someone who was transgender, or disapproved of her and didn’t think they should speak to her, as if they might somehow be contaminated with her “sin.” At least she had invited Vic into the house and hadn’t made her wait on the porch.

Mrs. McClung left them to go find the jars of strawberry jam and Vic rolled her eyes at Erin.

“Sorry,” Erin apologized. “Some people are just… stubborn.”

Vic nodded. “I’m a bit stubborn myself sometimes,” she admitted. “Can’t blame others for the same fault.”

Erin snickered. Vic being a “bit stubborn” was like saying that Everest was a bit tall. She and Willie had some real set-tos when they disagreed, neither one willing to back down.

Erin glanced around to see if anyone else were around, maybe other guests of the B&B, but they seemed to be alone.
